Renowned Iranian director Rakhshan Bani-Etemad has praised Cause of Death: Unknown, written and directed by Ali Zarnegar and produced by Majid Barzegar, describing it as a beacon of hope for Iran’s independent cinema.
Released in Iranian theaters on December 25, 2024, after a three-year suspension, the film immediately drew Bani-Etemad’s attention. Known for her own socially engaged films, she wrote a moving reflection following her viewing, encouraging audiences to experience the film for themselves.
“The news is brief,” she wrote. “Cause of Death: Unknown is finally being released after three years of suspension. Such a headline, a small glimmer of light amid these turbulent and dreadful times, is enough to lift one’s spirit. But when you sit down to watch the film, it tells another story altogether.”
Bani-Etemad went on to describe the work as “a powerful and dignified film” that restores faith in the survival of intellectual and artistic integrity in Iranian cinema. She praised its “remarkably intelligent screenplay and direction,” as well as its “cinematography and editing in perfect harmony with the story,” and “the outstanding performances of its cast.”
Highlighting the courage of producer Majid Barzegar for creating the film amid the dominance of big-budget productions, Bani-Etemad concluded with a call to action: “Given the lack of widespread publicity, it is only fair that each of us viewers become a medium ourselves.”
Set on a desolate road between Shahdad and Kerman, Cause of Death: Unknown follows seven passengers whose journey is interrupted by an unexpected incident. The ensemble cast includes Banipal Shoomoon, Alireza Sanifar, Neda Jebreili, Ali-Mohammad Radmanesh, Zakieh Behbahani, Reza Amouzad, and others.
Through Bani-Etemad’s endorsement, Cause of Death: Unknown emerges not just as a cinematic achievement but as a symbolic gesture toward the endurance of Iran’s social cinema in the face of adversity.
